The truth is that by far hands down the best option for solar is to purchase & own your system! Many people are getting ripped off by terrible Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). What makes a bad deal is a high $/kwh rate with an escalator! If you signed a PPA above $0.135/kwh with an escalator above 0.00% CANCEL IT IMMEDIATELY if you still can! Your sales rep likely did not use the word escalator because of the negative connotation. They probably said annual premium or annual increase. Perhaps they didn’t mention it at all!
PPAs Can Be Okay!
Don’t worry, there are instances where a PPA is a good deal!
0.00% increases with a $/kwh that is less than what your electric company CURRENTLY charges makes obvious financial sense. If you are not working and paying taxes (retired people) or otherwise aren’t eligible for a tax credit, or can’t qualify for a loan, then you probably made the right decision.
However, if your solar consultant tries to “push” or “pitch” or “pressure” you into a PPA saying that it is the BEST way to “go solar” RUN! That is not an honest person! Perhaps they only offer PPAs and will say anything to get their commission. Unfortunately, we know this firsthand.
What About Batteries?
Many companies are selling battery back up systems to their customers. Notice we said “selling” rather than “offering!” We do offer battery back ups to homeowners who have done their research and have decided that a battery back up system will benefit them.
Having been in the industry working with homeowners since 2019, we have found that batteries usually aren’t worth the money! Current battery options are very expensive and last about ten years whereas your solar modules will last 30! We found our customers find the most financial benefit by adding a few extra panels rather than purchasing an overpriced battery.
All that said, the battery issue is another good reason to PURCHASE rather than sign a PPA because when the battery technology improves you may want to add one to your system! Owning your system will give you the flexibility to add a battery in the future! A PPA typically will not give you that flexibility.
